During the aging process or after giving birth to a child, the vagina can become much less tight (known as vaginal laxity) and be looser in appearance. Although this is a natural process for most women, some feel embarrassed by it leading to their confidence and self-esteem being negatively affected. However, there are solutions available to correct this issue.

A vaginoplasty and ThermiVa treatments are just two of the options available to correct vaginal laxity and improve the appearance of the vagina.

What is a Vaginoplasty?

A vaginoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that is used to tighten the muscles inside the vagina and improve the appearance of the vagina and surrounding soft tissue. General anaesthetic is required for the treatment to be carried out and an overnight stay in hospital is expected post-surgery.

Vaginoplasty procedure

An anaesthetist will administer general anaesthetic that will put you into a state of controlled unconsciousness. Once the anaesthetic has taken affect, the muscles within the vagina are pulled tight and sewn together. This decreases the diameter of the vagina. Excess or sagging skin surrounding the vagina can also be removed to improve its outer appearance.
You will have some pain and discomfort for the first few days post-surgery that can be managed using pain killers. Most patients are advised to take a week off work for their body to heal but should be able to resume daily activities after this time. After 2-3 weeks, the results from the vaginoplasty surgery will be much more noticeable and the patient will experience little to no discomfort.

Although the results from surgery are permanent, it’s important to remember that vaginal laxity may return if you continue to have children and as you age.

What is ThermiVa?

ThermiVa is a non-surgical alternative to a vaginoplasty that tackles laxity and incontinence whilst improving the appearance of the vagina and surrounding soft tissue. The treatment uses radiofrequency waves to stimulate the production of collagen to improve laxity and tighten the vaginal walls.

ThermiVa procedure

A disposable wand that emits radiofrequency is inserted into the vagina and brushed over the surrounding soft tissue. The wand is temperature controlled for minimal discomfort and no anaesthetic or pain relief is required. Immediately after treatment, you can resume your daily activities because no recovery time is needed.

In most cases, three ThermiVa treatments over a three month period is recommended in order to experience the best results and each treatment only takes 30 minutes to complete. A further two treatments are required per year for the results from ThermiVa to be maintained.

Which one is best?

Both treatments are brilliant for changing the appearance of your vagina and tightening internal muscles, the treatment you choose depends on whether you are willing to have surgery.
The downtime needed to recover from a vaginoplasty can be challenging for people that have a busy schedule however, revision treatments are not required and the surgery creates permanent results. With ThermiVa, there is no recovery period and you can return home immediately after treatment.
