OVERVIEW
Breast reconstruction is used to restore the breast shape in women who have had a mastectomy. It can either be performed at the time of the mastectomy, or months or years later.
The aim of breast reconstruction is to restore the natural shape of the breast(s) following a mastectomy. This is achieved either through the use of implants or by using tissue taken from another part of the body. For women that have had one breast removed, the aim is to match the appearance of the other breast as closely as possible.
DR CONSTANTINE’S PHILOSOPHY
ON BREAST REDUCTION
My approach to breast reconstruction is highly personalized. I know from experience that it can be quite an emotional area for a lot of women, especially since the reason for breast reconstruction is nearly always as a result of breast cancer. This is why I always spend a good deal of time discussing the procedure with patients prior to the surgery at our constantine plastic surgery center in dallas. My aim is always to produce the most natural looking results possible and to assess each patient individually so I can determine what the best course of action is, whether it’s using an implant or body tissue.
RECONSTRUCTION USING AN IMPLANT
Implants are made from either saline or silicone and come in a range of sizes and shapes. Although some patients are concerned about implants not providing a natural look, the size and shape of the implants will be selected so they fit the natural proportions of your body.
RECONSTRUCTION USING BODY TISSUE
The alternative to using implants for breast reconstruction is to use body tissue. It involves transferring a flap of skin and fat from another part of the body to form the breast. Although this procedure is more complicated than using implants, it is a more suitable option for some patients. For example if you had radiotherapy as part of your treatment or if the chest skin and muscle is too tight, then using body tissue is the best option.
